The Popularity and Success of Nature Photography
By Andrew Kelly
Nature photography is a popular form of photography due to the beauty and awe that a good photograph can inspire. Many photographers specialize in this area because the work can be so original and sometimes spectacular. Nature photography can cover subjects such as animals, wildlife, flora, weather conditions and scenic views. The smallest spider web to the largest mountain range can all be classed as nature photography. All forms of the environment, organisms and the world around us can be classed as nature. This type of photography tends to be the easiest to sell, as it can seem so familiar to people around the world.
Magazines, advertisements and even postcards all sell more copies if the images are attractive to the consumer. Nature photography is a great seller because it can come in many forms and even the pictures that are not so attractive can still be stunning and even thought provoking. This is the upside to photography as a simple picture can convey many emotions and feelings. This field of work can provide a lot of income, as there is always a market for the material. This type of photograph can be planned or spontaneous but either way it will appeal to someone. As nature is all around us providing inspiration and opportunity, it can also be one of the easiest ways to start off in photography.
Basic Nature Photography Techniques
There are many techniques used to take good nature photographs. The best way to take professional pictures of nature is to practice. This can be started in the home by sitting before a dripping tap and trying to catch a picture of the water droplets while they are falling. This may sound like a simple exercise on nature photography but the results can look amazing and it is more difficult than it sounds to take the picture at the right time. Timing is everything in nature photography and being a split second too late could lose the photographer the perfect photograph. This is why practicing the precise moment to take a photograph can save time and effort in the long run.
Lighting is also important, as are the use of shadows on a subject. It is important for the photographer to realize exactly what effects various shades and lights will have on their nature photography sessions. This can also be practiced in the home by placing some flowers into a vase and then taking shots from various angles and with different lighting effects. The consequences of natural light should be taken into account as should artificial lighting. Taking the exact same picture at various times of the day and evening can show the photographer the interesting differences that lights and shadows provide.
