Tripods In Industry
By Andrew Kelly

The most common owner of a digital camera very likely does not own a tripod and has no reason to. He or she is of the “photo as proof” ilk; pictures are solely to prove that a person or persons were present at a certain location. “Here's me at the Grand Canyon. Here's me at the Eiffel tower.” Their slide shows are an endless procession of forced smiles framed by varying backgrounds.

Real photographers, of course, are a different breed altogether, whether they fall under the amateur or professional categories. To a real photographer, an approaching thunderstorm is an opportunity, a brilliant sunset, a painting to be captured, and a droplet on a blade of grass, a portrait of beauty in miniature. To a real photographer, a tripod is nearly essential.

Once you begin to delve in to the professional photography industry, you'll begin to realize that there's a lot more to the tripod choice than simply going to your local camera shop or Wal-Mart and buying a cheap aluminum tripod. There are all sorts of tripods for all sorts of situations, and you'd be wise to know the distinctions. Do you need something heavy, high quality, and sturdy? Look into buying a high quality full-sized tripod. Need something lighter, more portable? Why not get a tabletop tripod, or an extremely versatile unipod?

Every photographer has differing needs. Know what you need before you begin looking – you may even want to consider getting more than one, especially if you anticipate a large variety of situations in your photography career. Remember – there's only one way to make sure your photos are as clear as possible, and that's to invest in a good tripod.
