Is a Home School Preschool Right for You?
By Rosemary Phillips
Some parents decide to home school their preschoolers for various reasons such as transportation issues, cost if the preschool is not free, more than one child whose timings clash and so on. However, before you transform your kitchen table in to a school, here are a few questions you should ask yourself.
Personality
Are you as patient as a professional teacher? Sure, you love your children unconditionally, but is it in your disposition to patiently repeat the days of the week umpteen times before he gets it? Are you choosing to home school preschool for your own convenience or is it out of necessity?
You also need to evaluate the personality of the child whom you plan to home school in his preschool years? Is he a loner who could do with some social interaction or does he fare well with his peers? Is he the only child at home that he yearns for play mates or does he have enough fun with his siblings and neighbors?
Dedication
Are you going to make it a point to spend two hours three days a week at least engaged in some sort of activity with your child or will your enthusiasm taper off soon? Have you committed to and seen to completion other projects in the past or do you often take things up but leave them half way?
Child Care
While you attend to your preschooler, do you have arrangements for your other children or are the going to be disturbing you? Can you child swap with a neighbor or friend so that you can home school preschool two or three kids while the other moms can baby sit the younger siblings?
Supplies and Resources
Have you looked for home school preschool teaching resources on and offline? Do you like what you see? Do you see yourself enjoying those activities or is it just a boring way to spend a morning? Have you narrowed down reasonably priced suppliers where you can get activity books and craft projects?
Social Interaction
If you do decide to home school preschool your son or daughter, have you made arrangements for enough extracurricular social interaction so they learn other things like taking turns and waiting in line as opposed to just colors and numbers? Look for a home school club or community in your area or online and arrange to met up.
Or enroll your child in the local soccer team or swim class so he can meet other kids his age. Arrange parties and field trips with like minded parents so that your child can get the best of both worlds; your undivided attention and fun with his peers.
