Stopping Prostate Cancer with Prostate Cancer Radiation Treatment
By M .A. Fulmar
In the event that you, or another man you know is diagnosed with prostate cancer, it does not have to mean that the end if near. There are options to treat your diagnosis, such as prostate cancer radiation treatment. If you are diagnosed with prostate cancer, then this is an option that you need to seriously consider. Here are the facts behind prostate cancer, and what prostate cancer radiation treatment can do for you. The prostate gland is the gland just below the bladder in the male reproductive system that supplies nutrients and seminal fluid to the semen as it travels down the urethra. When men go in for their physical checkup, their physician will perform a rectal exam to see feel for any abnormalities with their prostate gland. If their gland is found to be abnormally large, then they will test the PSA (prostate specific antigen) level to see if it is higher than normal. If the PSA level is high, then that could indicate the presence of cancer in the prostate. At this point, the physician will conduct a biopsy of the prostate to test for cancerous cells. If prostate cancer is diagnosed to be at its early stage, then the physician will recommend going in for prostate cancer radiation treatment.
Treatment
Prostate cancer radiation treatment can come in two forms: Brachytherapy or External radiation treatment. Bracytherapy is the process in which radioactive capsules are inserted into the prostate gland to kill the malignant cells. This is the essential prostate cancer radiation treatment is for patients whose cancer is in the initial stages and has not spread. External radiation treatment is the other alternative, in which high energy x-rays are administered onto the prostate gland, thus killing the malignant cells within the prostate and the surrounding areas as well. This type of treatment is recommended for those who are at the elevated stages of prostate cancer.
Because prostate cancer is a slow progressing cancer, the survival rate for those who are diagnosed, and treated using these two types of prostate cancer radiation treatment is high. It is only when the cancer goes undiagnosed and untreated those men can actually die from it. Regular check-ups and prostate cancer radiation treatment are the best ways to increase the survival rate for most men. If you are diagnosed with prostate cancer, you have several treatment options available, with radiation being one of them.
