Prostate Cancer Symptoms to watch out for
By M .A. Fulmar
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer that is diagnosed in men. The good news is that this cancer is completely treatable as long as it is detected in its early stages. Because early detection is the key to effective treatment with almost any type of cancer, it is important for men to have yearly prostate cancer screenings, as well as knowing the prostate cancer symptoms to watch out for. Many times prostate cancer will not include any visible symptoms, making it extremely important to make your yearly screening whether you have detected prostate cancer symptoms or not. If you are experiencing some symptoms however, it is a good idea to get to your doctor's office as soon as possible to find out what the cause of your symptoms is.
What are the Symptoms?
Some of the prostate cancer symptoms to watch out for include a weak flow of urine, or a urine flow that stops and then starts up again. The urinary tract runs through the prostate gland, which is why urinary problems can be one of the first detectable prostate cancer symptoms. You might also experience an urgent need to urinate, or you might not be able to urinate easily. You might feel pain or burning, or see blood in your urine or semen. You might also experience problems having an erection, or have painful ejaculation. Finally, you may feel frequent pain in your lower back and hips or thigh area. All of these complaints can be prostate cancer symptoms and should be reported to your doctor as soon as possible.
What will your Doctor do?
If your doctor suspects that your symptoms are indeed the result of prostate cancer, there are some tests that he can do to get a definitive diagnosis. A blood test can be used to check for prostate-specific antigens (PSA).This test may or may not be followed by an ultrasound and biopsy to confirm the diagnosis of cancer. Once you have a certain diagnosis, you can begin making decisions about the best treatment plan for you. Since prostate cancer symptoms do not always present themselves in the early stages of the disease, it is more likely that your doctor will find your cancer during a routine prostate screening. This early detection will greatly increase your odds for successful treatment.
While prostate cancer can be a scary diagnosis to receive, the good news is that there are many options available to treat your disease effectively. The key to curing prostate cancer is in regular screenings with your doctor and an awareness of the prostate cancer symptoms that you should be on the lookout for.
