By Elizabeth Penning

Restless leg syndrome is quite an unpleasant situation in which the patient experiences sensations that border on the bizarre, with all sorts of aching, burning, creeping, throbbing as well as tingling sensations occurring that even reminds the sufferer of insects crawling inside their legs. Those who regularly suffer restless leg syndrome would vouchsafe that it is very frustrating and fatiguing for them as they constantly feel the need to move their legs.

Causes Are Mostly Unknown

The causes of restless leg syndrome are mostly unknown and are most often attributed to family history, and can also be ascribed to many other conditions occurring. To get temporary relief, the patient can move his or her feet, though they may require treatment for longer lasting relief. As such, there is not much concrete information available on how to cure rls, and people may report mild to moderate symptoms and thus require certain lifestyle changes as well as perform certain activities to reduce or eliminate the symptoms.

Though there is no real information available today on how to cure rls, decreasing the amount of caffeine, alcohol as well as tobacco will be sure to provide a certain degree of relief. One may also be prescribed certain supplements to correct deficiencies in iron, folate as well as magnesium, but it certainly would not be considered to be more than a substitute for the complete solution of how to cure rls.

Restless leg syndrome is a lifelong condition for which, to know how to cure rls, considerable more effort is required before a solution can be arrived at that will be considered to be the final answer. What is known, however, is that symptoms can worsen as the person ages and current therapies are able to control the disorder, minimize symptoms as well as provide patients with more restless sleep?

Even then, this cannot be considered to be the last word on how to cure rls and it is also common for patients to have remissions, periods in which symptoms decrease or disappear for short terms or even months – but the symptoms eventually will reappear once again.

In order to gain insights on how to cure rls, there is continuing research being conducted on restless leg syndrome, and the goal of such research is to get a better understanding on RLS. Current research seems to be focusing on investigating the possible role of dopamine function in restless leg syndrome. Dopamine is that chemical messenger that transmits signals between one area of the brain and the next relay station of the brain, and creates smooth as well as purposeful muscle activity. If such transmissions of dopamine signals get impaired, it may be a major factor in causing restless leg syndrome.

With more research, it is hoped that doctors and researchers will arrive at a conclusive means of knowing how to cure rls. Till then, the patients have to make do with short and medium term methods of relief and include herbal and natural treatments.
