Natural Remedies Or Medication For RLS
By Elizabeth Penning

RLS or restless legs syndrome is a sleep affliction that is characterized by symptoms experienced within the legs during the nighttime. Some of these symptoms include the sensations of tingling, creeping, pulling or pain. Generally, the onset of this disorder is exacerbated when the individual is lying down or has been seated over an extensive period of time.

There is no known cure for this medical ailment. However, there are two options that are available for the individual suffering from RLS. One of those options is the use of natural remedies.

The other option available to the individual suffering from this condition is by taking medication for RLS. Medication for RLS is generally prescribed to those individuals who are experiencing acute symptoms associated with this disorder.

The Causes Of RLS

Before discussing the treatment of restless legs syndrome through natural remedies or medication for RLS, it would be prudent to understand the nature of the condition. First of all, it is important to know that not only is there no known cure for this ailment, but also what causes restless legs syndrome remains a mystery.

It does appear, however, that there are certain emotional and physical conditions that trigger the onset of RLS. One identified correlation between the onset of an episode of RLS and an emotional activator is in the level of stress experienced by the individual.

It also appears that episodes of restless leg syndrome are activated by certain medical conditions. These medical conditions include low iron levels in the blood, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and problems with the kidneys.

In addition, it seems that the taking of certain substances can also bring about occurrences of episodes of RLS. Some of those identified substances include the usage of caffeine and some prescribed medicines. Also, the condition of RLS may be part of the genetic makeup.

Medication For RLS

For those individuals who suffer severely from symptoms associated with this disorder, there are certain medications for RLS that are indicated. These medications, because of the similarity between restless legs syndrome and Parkinson's disease, are categorized as dopamine drugs. The work of these dopamine drugs is to encourage the production of dopamine. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that is created within the brain and is paramount to a properly functioning central nervous system.

Another form of medication for RLS that may alleviate some of the symptoms includes a prescription for sleeping pills. In addition, the attending physician may prescribe medications that are typically used to treat epilepsy.

Natural Remedies

Besides the use of medication for RLS there are a number of natural remedies that can be utilized to relieve the symptoms. Some of those natural remedies include the taking of a warm bath, the application of ice or heating to the affected area, lower extremity calisthenics and reducing the use of caffeine.
