Prescribed Medicine For Restless Leg Syndrome
By Elizabeth Penning
Restless leg syndrome is characterized by a number of symptoms. Some of those symptoms include the unexplainable urge to move the lower extremities, the experiencing of pain and sometimes feelings that are described by the sufferer as a cramping or burning sensation. In addition, the individual who suffers from RLS describe feelings in their legs utilizing terms such as creeping or crawling.
There is no known cause for restless leg syndrome and there is no cure for this condition. Sometimes, the pain can be very excruciating. In those cases, the attending physician may prescribe medications for the patient. This medicine for restless leg syndrome can represent a number of categories that relieve the symptoms of RLS. Three of those categories of medicine include the dopamine family, the opioid family and the anticonvulsant family.
Dopamine
The function of this category of medicine for restless leg syndrome is to stimulate the production of dopamine. Dopamine is a required neurotransmitter that is produced within the brain. Dopamine is an essential element that is required to ensure that the central nervous system is properly functioning. This type of medicine for restless leg syndrome is only indicated for those individuals who suffer acutely from RLS.
Examples of drugs within the dopamine family are pergolide, bromocriptine, ropinirole and ropinirole. These particular prescribed medicines for restless leg syndrome not only stimulate the production of dopamine, but act as a pain reliever in treating the severe painful symptoms of RLS. Some of these particular drugs prescribed as medicine for restless leg syndrome are also prescribed in the treatment of Parkinson's disease.
However, as with all medicines, there may be side effects. One of those side effects is extreme drowsiness. In addition, the use of some of dopamine medications has been associated with an adverse effect being placed on heart valves.
Opioids
Another classification of prescribed medicines for restless leg syndrome is opioids. Examples of opioids are codeine, vicodin, oxycodone and other derivatives of opiates.
The work of these medicines for restless leg syndrome is to treat the painful symptoms of this disorder. Side effects of taking an opioid can be constipation, drowsiness, disorientation and retention of urine. In addition, the use of opioids can be addictive.
Anticonvulsants
One additional category of medicines for restless leg syndrome is found in the anticonvulsant family. These medications are indicated to relief anxiety, act as a sedative and muscle relaxant and perform as an anticonvulsant.
