Cost-Effective Restless Leg Syndrome Natural Treatments
By Elizabeth Penning
Natural treatments for Restless leg syndrome are ever expanding with more and more researching going into the disease as time goes by. It is a disorder that most commonly affects pregnant women and is likely to run in families. Sufferers of Restless Leg Syndrome describe the disorder as the uncontrollable urge to move their legs, which sometimes also occurs in other parts of the body. Though not necessarily painful, the disorder does have a negative impact on the sufferer' life as it is disruptive, inconvenient, and uncontrollable, with most sufferers having trouble relaxing and sleeping. There are, however, a number of Restless Leg Syndrome natural treatments available that sufferers can try, that aren't painful and don't cost the earth.
Prevention Can Be Better Than Cure
Restless Leg Syndrome is thought to be caused by the lack of certain minerals in the body such as iron, folate and magnesium. It is also thought to be triggered by certain substances such as nicotine, caffeine, alcohol and prescription drugs. Therefore, research has recommended that sufferers try to ensure that their diet is high in iron (such as red meat), folate (such as green leafy vegetables) and magnesium, and limiting or eliminating their intake of alcohol and caffeine. For their for the own sake, smokers should also try and kick their habit, as even if it does not reduce the effects of their disorder, it will lead to a healthier and happier lifestyle long-term.
Homeopathy
Homeopathy is Restless Leg Syndrome natural treatment that sufferers can try, recommended by Chris Meletis, N.D., a naturopathic physician and medicinary director at the National College of Naturopathic Medicine in Portland, Oregon. He recommends trying Tarentula hispanica 12C three times a day until improvement is noticed. For restless legs at night, he recommends Causticum 12C in similar doses. Homeopathy, like any treatment, can be a trial and error activity, so therefore if this does not work, there are other options to try, or to try in conjunction with so as to cover a wise spectrum of possible causes of the disorder.
Massage
Massage may work as a natural treatment for Restless Leg Syndrome. This can be done yourself, as recommended by Elliot Greene, past president of the American Massage Therapy Association. This is done by placing the palm of your left hand on the largest part of your right calf, with you fingers pointing towards your heel. Grasp the muscle, and pull it as far from your leg as comfortable. Squeeze the muscle several times then release. Repeat this for about five minutes before starting on the other leg. Thighs can also be massaged by simply stroking and grasping them gently with both hands, working from your knees upwards. This may provide relief, or stop the twitching from occurring.
Yoga
Alice Christensen, the founder and executive director of the American Yoga Association, recommends Yoga as a great way to handle restless legs as it can help to improve circulation. As well as this, Yoga can play a part in being a mental focus activity that many researchers believe can distract the mind to help delay or discourage the leg twitching. Yoga is also a relaxant, something which many sufferers of Restless Leg Syndrome can find difficult to do. But like any Restless Leg Syndrome natural treatment, Yoga is one that may or may not work for any particular sufferer, but can be worth the while in trying it not only for relief, but for general good health and well-being.
