The Best Restless Leg Syndrome Remedies For Sufferers
By Elizabeth Penning
Restless Leg Syndrome is a disease that affects around 5% to 10% of the Western population. It is a frustratingly inconvenient disease, with sufferers often reporting feelings of uncontrollable restlessness and discomfort in their legs, and sometimes an inability to relax and sleep. Some sufferers have also reported these restless feelings occur in other parts of the body; however the majority of sufferers claim to feel it more-so in the legs or in the legs before other body parts become affected. Though not necessarily painful, Restless Leg Syndrome sufferers claim that the disease has an adverse affect on their lives in the uncontrollable urge to move their legs. However, on the positive side, there has been a great deal of research done by a number of institutions to find Restless Leg Syndrome remedies by looking into who an why the disease affects certain people, but not others.
The Causes of Restless Leg Syndrome
Restless Leg Syndrome, like most diseases, varies from person to person in terms of cause, the type and/or degree of symptoms that the sufferer may develop. Research into the disease has found that there are a number of causes, and therefore a number of Restless Leg Syndrome remedies that people can try. Which one, however, is best suited to which patient is usually a trial and error activity, with some remedies supplying a large amount of relief for one person, but none for another. Most sufferers will find that there are a number of precautions that should be taken to initially prevent the disease from becoming worse, as opposed to trialing remedies in an effort to cure it. It has been noted that the disease is a sensorimotor neurologically based disorder and can be linked to a number of causes including: heredity, low iron levels, low levels of iron receptors in the body and low levels of magnesium. The remedy will therefore be dependant on what the particular cause is for each sufferer.
Low Risk Restless Leg Syndrome Remedies
There are a number of Restless leg Syndrome remedies that can be tried, and some that are classed as ‘low risk” – meaning that they will not cause any side-effects even if they do not lessen the symptoms of the disease. These include: taking a hot or cold bath or shower, light exercise (particularly before bedtime), massage to the affected areas in the body, a higher intake of iron rich foods and vitamin C (which helps the body to absorb iron) and partaking in a mental activity such as reading, a puzzle or cross stitch. Limiting or excluding substances that may encourage the symptoms of Restless Leg Syndrome such as alcohol, nicotine, certain medical drugs and caffeine may also help reduce the symptoms of the disease.
If All Else Fails…
If the more “low risk” type remedies are found to be unsuccessful, sufferers can try other Restless Leg Syndrome remedies such as drug therapy, which would be prescribed by your doctor on a case by case analysis. Some drugs considered include: quinine (often used for cramps), dopaminergic agents, though these are usually only prescribed for very severe patients, as it is a drug generally associated with the relief from the symptoms from Parkinson's Disease (which is not related to Restless Leg Syndrome), sedatives, pain relievers and anticonvulsants. However, before prescribing drugs, doctors will be more likely to look at altering the diet (as low levels of iron are generally associated with the disease) as a Restless Leg Syndrome remedy.
