Options and Treatment for Restless Leg Syndrome
By Elizabeth Penning
For those of you whose lives are busy enough, sleep is essential to keep your body healthy and active. But sometimes your body will not allow you to have a good night's rest. Restless leg syndrome is a condition that keeps millions of people up at the hours of the night with discomfort and pain. Fortunately, however, depending upon the severity of your RLS, there can be treatment for restless leg syndrome. Finding the right treatment for restless leg syndrome is essential to relieve your symptoms and help you to rest easier. Here is some background on RLS, and what treatment is out there for you.
Restless leg syndrome is a relatively unknown neurological disorder brought on by feelings of itching, crawling and burning within the legs. RLS appears mostly at night, when the body is resting. The sufferer will feel this discomfort, or even pain, and will find relief if they continuously move their legs. RLS can cause disruption in sleep, leading to exhaustion and fatigue, which as a result can have a severe impact on daily activities.
Causes and Treatment of RLS
Physicians cannot pinpoint one reason for RLS. Restless legs can be a side effect of taking certain medicines, such as anti-nausea, anti-seizure or even simple cold and allergy medications. It can also be a symptom of an existing disorder such as Parkinson's disease or diabetes. Pregnant women experience RLS in their last trimester of pregnancy. Also, those who are lacking in certain vitamins such as folic acid, and iron can experience restless legs. There is not one treatment for restless leg syndrome. First, the physician has to find out what is causing the restless legs before they are able find a treatment. Usually, for those who are suffering from restless legs as a side effect of their disease, the treatment for that disease will also help curb RLS.
Or, if the restless leg syndrome is severe enough, the physician will prescribe low dosage depressants or opiates for relief. For mild to moderate symptoms, the treatment for restless leg syndrome may include simple measures such as cutting back on tobaccos, caffeinated substances and alcohol. Your physician may also recommend that you regulate your sleep patterns, and add more iron to your diet. Those who have tried this treatment for restless leg syndrome have discovered that it actually works for them. However, it is best to first consult with your physician to see what kind of treatment for restless leg syndrome will work best for you.
