Train On Indoor Rock Climbing Wall Before Heading Outside
By Brad Jones
There are several locations offering use of an indoor rock climbing wall and you can develop your training needs in the relative comfort of an indoor arena. Before joining a gym or other facility for rock climbing, look for the basics and how they can help you achieve your goals.
The first thing every indoor rock climbing wall should have is a fall-zone made of padding sufficient to prevent serious injuries in the event of a fall. Ensure it will be there regardless of which part of the wall you are climbing.
Additionally, there should be sections of the indoor rock climbing wall to help you reach your goals as they relate to training. Strength training can be performed on a vertical wall using short burst of power along with repetitions. This may include overhangs for you to climb up to and over quickly.
Endurance training can be best when less than full strength is used over a longer period of time. Again, a vertical indoor rock climbing wall climbed slower may help with endurance, or a slight backwards angle, no mare than 70 percent, can also be a big help. Which ever you choose for training purposes, you can add a foothold every other day until you achieve your desired results.
Building Your Own Wall Requires Planning
If you determine to build your own indoor rock climbing wall, the goals of your training remain the same. Decide which type of training you want and design the wall from those ideas. You can envision the wall, but drawing it on paper will help decide the best means of accomplishing it within available space. Insure you have enough room at the location to build in all the climbing options you will need.
Make a scale model from your drawings using poster board or cardboard and remember that bending the cardboard is easy to get it to fit right, but heavy plywood won't be as easy to work with, so design your model exactly how you want it to look. Conduct a cost analysis with a materials list to determine if the expense of having your own indoor rock climbing wall will be worth the frequency of its use.
Additionally, decide if your indoor rock climbing wall will be attached to a permanent building or strong enough to be free-standing. It can also be built in sections for easy moving or adding additional sections later on as the need arises.
