What do You Look For in a Romance Novel?
By Jennifer Williams

Perhaps you live a busy life in which there is not much time for romance. Or, perhaps you live a boring life in which you fantasize about the perfect romance. Regardless of why, you just love to relax with a good romance novel. There are many romance novels on the market to choose from. However, the most popular romance novels all have several important facets.

Important Romance Novel Facet #1: The Beautiful Maiden

Perhaps she is a proper and beautiful member of the aristocracy who is dissatisfied with her husband. Or, perhaps she is a sultry and stubborn vixen who is captured by raiding bandits. Whatever the case, all romance novels have a central female figure, and more often than not, that woman is beautiful. This is because female readers like to pretend they are that main character, so given the choice, why not be beautiful?

Important Romance Novel Facet #2: The Handsome and Mysterious Man

The beautiful maiden must have a love affair with a handsome and mysterious man. This man is often a Native American warrior, or a Lord. Some novels, to add a bit of emotion to the plot, include a tragic past for the mysterious man, a past which he must overcome so that he can love more passionately than he ever has before. If the main male character is not someone that they reader would be attracted to in real life, then chances are she would not read the novel in the first place.

Important Romance Novel Facet #3: Sexual Tension

If there is one thing that all romance novels must have if they are to be compelling at all, it is a great deal of sexual tension between the two main characters. It generally has to do with the female resisting the male's sexual advances. Perhaps the woman was newly married and thought she loved her husband. However, when she was captured by the seemingly evil lord-so-and-so, she began to have second thoughts. Most romance novels are thus propelled along by “the chase.”

The More the Better

Of course, a beautiful woman, a handsome man, and lots of sexual tension are just a few of the many things an ideal romance novel should have. Other things include lots of sex scenes, and thrilling action sequences. To find the novel that is best for you, visit your local bookstore or search the internet. With the proper research, you will find yourself swept up in an excellent romance novel in no time.
