Cleaning Rugs: An Imperative Part of Maintenance
By May Brindle

No matter how beautiful your home is, it will be appealing to the eyes only if it is clean. Otherwise even the prettiest of houses looks shabby and unhygienic. Rugs are very common decorative items that enhance the beautiful interior of a house and cleaning rugs properly and regularly is an important part of maintaining the upkeep of one's home. Rugs also add on to the exquisite looks of one's corporate office and other work places. Since most of the fine quality rugs are quite expensive cleaning these rugs is a very careful and responsible task.

The Best Methods of Cleaning a Rug

While some rugs should be cleaned annually others may not require such close attention. An excellent test that can be applied to find out if your rug is ready for a visit to the drycleaners is to flip one side of the rug and kick the back side. If it coughs up a cloud of dust then cleaning that rug is a good idea.

Small rugs can be cleaned at home very easily. You can vacuum them on both the sides before washing with a mild shampoo. As a precaution it is best to test one corner of the rug for any possible color run before cleaning the whole rug. Make sure that you scrub the rug gently in the same direction as that of the nap. Dry it properly on both the sides.

In case your pet urinates on the rug or you spill something on it, make sure that you clean the rug immediately so that there is no lasting damage. Your first action in such a situation should be to soak as much liquid as possible with the help of a paper tissue or a clean wet cloth. You can then clean the damaged part of the rug using a mild soap. This should be followed by a good rinse with cool water saturated with white vinegar that helps to lessen the odor and prevents any color run. The correct proportion is to add about 1 cup vinegar in one gallon water.

Before beginning the rug cleaning session always look if any particular instruction is available on the tag. You must also make sure that the brushes you use are soft and that you don't scrub the rug too strongly. Always remember that a gentle handling while cleaning the rugs increases its chances of having a long life and a possibility of it becoming a family heirloom.
