Turkish Rug Can Be Of Many Different Colors, Sizes And Shapes
By May Brindle

There may not be conclusive evidence as to where the technique of weaving first began but, not many would doubt that the art of weaving is generally thought to have originated in Central Asia. With migration of tribes from Central Asia to its western regions, and with the generally colder climates in these new parts, it became necessary for these tribes to learn how to use goat hair to form tents, which they did admirably well. With time, these tribes realized that they needed to isolate them from the humidity within the tents and, thus required floor coverings. This led to the making of floor coverings also known as “Kilims” which depicted worshipped symbols, thanks to the age of Paganism that existed at the time.

Early History

With improvements in the art of weaving and, due to their reign over Persia, at the end of the 11th century and, soon after, Turkish rugs came to depict the splendor of their Selcuk origins and, the oldest surviving Selcuk carpets date back to the 13th and 14th centuries. One can see some of these Turkish rugs in the Mevlana Museum in Konya and, the Kier collection in London. And, Turkish rug designs also began to appear prominently in paintings made by European artists. After the 16th century the Turkish rug were very much like the Persian designs or had native traditions.

A lot of tender and loving care goes into making the Turkish rug that are available in diverse colors, sizes, textures, shapes as well as patterns. No doubt, the Turkish rugs are well known for their splendid colors as well as lovely textures and, Turkish rugs are a major part of Turkish history and, are used in many different ways.

A little known fact about the making of Turkish rugs is that only females make them and, this may be due to the fact that the men are too busy going to work. The woman uses a flat weaving board that has little strings hanging from it that allow her to hang the threads for making the rugs and, the design of the Turkish rug may be either symmetrical or non-symmetrical knots. Also, Turkish rugs come in different sizes and shapes and, there are eight different sizes. The symbols used on the Turkish rugs are also believed to be an ancient vocabulary that the Turkish people used during the time of Egypt. Buying a Turkish rug is pretty much the same as buying any other item except for the amount of bargaining that is involved before striking the final deal.
