Direct TV Satellite Receiver Is Heart Of System
By Tony Cunningham

Of all the components of your satellite television systems the Direct TV satellite receiver is the most important, as well as the most expensive. All authorized programming and descrambling of the television signal happen in the Direct TV satellite receiver as well as having the approved signal sent to your television monitor.

Your Direct TV satellite receiver also holds your programming card, without which your system will not work properly. It is designed to be programmed by the satellite television broadcasting company, which authorizes the signals to which you are subscribed to get through. The Direct TV satellite receiver descrambles the programs that are encoded on your card to make them viewable.

The Direct TV satellite receiver also contains the communication ports, usually through a telephone line, that allows it to communicate with the company's computers for programming updates and information. The receiver also contains the circuitry which enables you to watch different channels. When you change the channel on the Direct TV satellite receiver, it send a signal to the programming card, allowing a different approved signal to pass through to your television.

Many Receivers Contain Digital Video Recorders

Many of the newer Direct TV satellite receiver units also contain a digital video recorder, which works much like a videocassette recorder however these units make recording programs very simple. Usually a push of a button while a program is highlighted on the system will set it up to record. With a digital video recorder it is possible to pause, rewind and replay live television while the program continues to play.

For example, in the middle of your favorite show the phone rings, you can press pause the show will stop. Once done with your conversation, you can press play on the Direct TV satellite receiver and the program will begin to be displayed again where you left off. You can choose to watch the show in its entirety or, in the even you are not interested in watching commercials, you can fast forward through them until you are caught up with the program in progress.

Another plus is while watching sports, for example, a play occurs that is simply unbelievable. You can hit rewind and watch the play again on your Direct TV satellite receiver, even in slow motion, until you can understand how it occurred. Once it becomes believable, you can fast forward to catch up with the live action.
