Different Types Of Saunas
By Barbara Pinnington
A sauna is a small house or room made for wet or dry heat sessions. Sauna sessions are usually social gatherings with participants that sit around rooms in temperatures over 176 °F (or 80 °C). This temperature allows the participants to sweat and thus induces a great deal of relaxation.
Modern saunas provide people who wish to relax different sauna options. You can also choose from a variety of heat sources, including electricity, gas, heat, solar power and other methods. You will find dry, wet, smoke, steam and infrared wave saunas. You also have the option of building residential saunas or hiring sauna services in beauty parlors and sauna houses.
Which Kind Of Sauna Is Right For Me?
People become attracted to saunas largely because of the health benefits it provides. However, if you're new to sauna sessions and you are overwhelmed by the different options for relaxation, then you have to distinguish each sauna to determine which kind of service is right for you.
Smoke saunas are the original Finnish sauna. When you prefer Finnish sauna, you will enter a room with fire lit under a pile of rocks. Once the fire is put out, the heat is stored in the room as source of steam. While temperature is only at around 60 °C, humidity is left high. A session can be around two to five hours, depending on whether the combustion is traditional or modern.
Continuous fire saunas do not store heat. Instead, stones are positioned on a firebox and smokestack. Unlike original Finish saunas, the room will not smell of smoke, but expect a hotter temperature. Heating the room will only take about an hour or less. However, be aware that a continuous fire sauna is a fire hazard.
Saunas with electric heaters are similar to a continuous fire sauna. The only difference is that electric heaters include a switch that can be operated with just one click. Meaning, fire hazard can be prevented easily.
When you want a 24/7 sauna, then “always-on saunas” are perfect for you. This kind of sauna has large heat reservoirs with almost 200 kilograms of stones. These saunas are perfect for commercial sauna houses since it is more expensive compared to other types.
The most controversial saunas are infrared-types that use special heaters in generating radiation rays, similar to the suns UV rays. Experts recommend an infrared sauna in killing bacteria to prevent acne, encourage sweating and promote general health.
While entire sauna options provide you with health benefits, your decision will depend on the kind of heat source you prefer.
