The Importance of Skincare
By Linda Rogers

Skin care is extremely important to good health. Your skin is the largest organ in your body and it performs a number of vital functions.

Skin problems can exist from birth with eczema being a common complaint. As we grow it is possible that we develop acne which can have a devastating effect upon the sufferers general well being.

Skin care products are available for every possible skin problem that we are ever likely to witness.

Skin Care Regime

A good skin care regime is crucial to the maintenance of healthy looking skin. Even if you have perfect skin it is extremely important that good care of your skin is continued. There are a great many skin care products available for all skin types so finding those which are suitable for your particular skin type is relatively easy. However you really need to understand the skin type and the best methods for that type.

Skin Types

There are many skin types across the full spectrum of human society. Each type requires a different approach to skincare. Skin pigmentation can play a part with slight differences for each particular racial skin type. We will be looking at the common skin types associated with cosmetics and medical aesthetics of which there are three.

Oily Skin
Oily skin appears shiny, even slightly wet, due to the over secretion of sebum. Oily skin commonly has pores which are wide, open and enlarged. Without adequate skin care it is likely that pimples/spots, blackhead and whiteheads will develop. This is aggravated by the fact that oily skin tends to pick up more dirt than the other types.

Dry Skin
Dry skin is the opposite to oily skin (above) in that it is caused by the skin's failure to produce sufficient sebum. Dry skin is often flaky, tight/drawn and the overall complexion appears dull and lifeless. Dry skin can become very sensitive especially in extremes of weather such as sun/cold and wind.

Combination Skin
The category referred to as combination skin covers almost all other ranges of skin types. These types range from normal to oily to dry to oily.

Skin Care Products

There is a massive selection of skin care products available on the market today. Products to cover for the treatment of all skin types. It is very important that the correct skincare product is used. For example it is important to use a non-greasy cleanser to clean oily skin and alcohol based toners and astringents should be used to help dry the skin. If these product were to be used on dry skin it would just make the problem worse.

Acne is a very common problem with a massive range of skin care acne treatments available. With such skincare problems as acne it is often beneficial to seek professional medical advice or, at the very least, have a chat with your family doctor before following a particular skin care regime. In severe cases of acne there may be a need for drug treatment and in this case you must seek medical advice.

Over the last decade or more I have noticed a massive increase in the number of people seeking to use natural skin care products or even homemade skin care recipes. There are many benefits to using such products not least the reduction in the number of chemicals to which the skin in exposed.

In later articles we will look at such home made skin care products together with many alternatives. For now we hope that you find the articles below most useful in helping you develop a healthy skin care regime and, at the least, a greater understanding of the subject of skin care.
