The Importance of Sleep Disorders Awareness Month
By M. A. Fulmar
Sleep disorders can occur due to a very large variety of reasons such as an existing medical condition, work or school overload and old age. Stress is the number one cause of sleeping disorders in people of all age groups. Sleep disorders are an extremely serious condition, which will affect your overall health in the long run.
In Maine, The Governor of the state, John Elias Baldacci declared the month of March as the sleep disorders awareness month for the first time in 2005. Here is what's desired to be accomplished by making people aware of sleep disorders.
Understanding and Recognizing Sleep Disorders
The first thing that the sleep disorders awareness month is meant to do is educate as many people as possible about sleep disorders and the importance of recognizing the symptoms. Long term sleep disorders can affect your health and daily activities as one will experience irritability and a change in appetite. The latter results in over eating and gaining weight quickly or not eating at all and losing weight fast. Both of which are not healthy for the body.
Other symptoms include fatigue, the inability to concentrate or focus on your work or a particular activity and thus, risking injury to yourself and to others if you are handling a sharp object, driving or using hazardous materials. Lack of sleep can also affect your relationship, as you will experience mood wings and even depressive periods.
Dealing with Sleep Disorders
The next thing that the sleep disorders awareness month is meant to accomplish is dealing with sleep disorders, which is not always as easy as taking a pill. Taking sleeping pills is a bad habit and will also leave you with a groggy feeling the next day, which can therefore affect your mood and performance. Sleep disorders awareness month will help people understand their own body and work with it to combat these disorders the most natural way with the help of your doctor.
We are all unique and that means our sleep disorders will manifest differently depending on a variety of factors that are unique to your body and mind. Therefore, it is important that when you face any sleeping disorders you consult a doctor and try to work towards the best and least harmful option in order to improve your condition.
Help Beat Your Sleep Disorder
The sleep disorders awareness month helps those patients that encounter sleep disorders understand and deal better with this disease, which if left untreated can be fatal. Therefore if you or any other member of your family is currently experiencing what fits the description of sleep disorders, you may want to take a minute and learn more about this disease. You can do so online by logging on to the official site of Maine Health and contacting your doctor as soon as possible for a full examination.
