Solar Power Energy: An Alternative To Fossil Fuels
By George Sykes

Solar power is one natural source of power and the sun that provides us with this energy has been doing so for billions of years and is in fact, solar radiation that reaches the earth. The beauty of solar power energy is that it can be converted directly or indirectly into different forms of energy like heat and electricity. The big disadvantage to solar power energy is that it can be intermittent by nature and varies in the manner in which solar energy reaches the earth and for collecting solar energy, a large area is required. Once harnessed, solar power energy can be used to heat water for domestic purposes as well as heat spaces in buildings or dry agricultural products and also generate electrical energy. The first use of solar power energy was way back in 1830 when the British astronomer John Herschel made a solar collector box to cook food while on an expedition to Africa and this small experiment has flowered into many larger projects for using the sun's energy to drive many other systems.

Photovoltaics Are Used To Convert Solar Energy Into Electricity

Electric utilities make use of photovoltaics in order to convert solar energy into electricity. Photovoltaic energy or converting sunlight into electricity with the help of a photovoltaic cell, also known as a solar cell that is made of silicon alloys and is a common method utilized in deriving solar power energy. The essence of sunlight is what is known as photons or particles of solar energy and they contain varied amounts of energy and when such photons strike a photovoltaic cell they can be reflected or pass right through or be absorbed and it is only the absorbed energy that generates electricity.

In the United States, a lot of effort has gone into developing solar power energy technologies to power the world and the motivating force behind such efforts is the belief that science and technology will be able to deliver new energy resources such as solar power energy that is clean, reliable as well as secure. There are many potential benefits that can be derived from solar power energy technologies as they help in diversifying the energy supply, reduce dependence on imported fuels as well as improve the quality of the air that one breathes. In addition, solar power energy is also able to offset greenhouse gas emissions as also acts to stimulate the economy by creating more jobs that are concerned with manufacturing as well as installing solar energy systems.
