Three Reasons To Install A Solar Power Fan
By George Sykes

When we hear on the news about the energy crisis and the fact that we are depleting Earth's natural resources we often wonder what we can do as an individual. Sometimes the news conveys a story about homeowners who install solar panels and completely retrofit their home to be solar powered.

Even with the possible grants that are available, we know that we are not able to afford such an extensive overhaul of our residence to show to others that we are responsible stewards of the Earth's resources. However, we can do our part.

One of the simple things that we can do for our home and still do our part in conserving our natural resources is to install a solar power fan. A solar power fan is an energy saving piece of equipment that can provide a reduction in your power bill. In addition, it is easy to install.

Energy Efficient

A solar power fan operates strictly from the energy produced by the Sun's rays. A solar power fan is a fan that reduces the hot air that is found in the attic of a home. During the heat of the day, during the summertime, the attic temperature can soar to as much as 150°. The purpose of the attic fan is to reduce the temperature of the home's attic and provide for a more comfortable living environment in the rooms located beneath the attic.

A solar power fan will work just as effectively as a regular electrically powered attic fan, but with added benefits. Because the solar power fan receives its power from the sunlight, it operates slower in the morning works at optimum speed during the height of the day and then slows down towards the end of the day.

Savings Cost

The use of a conventional electric attic fan can increase your electricity bill by as much as $10 each month. By installing and using a solar power fan you can remove that added $10 from your bill each month and put it to better use. In addition to the economic benefit, you will be doing your part to conserve energy.

Also, the cost of purchasing and installing the solar power fan can be gained back by reducing your monthly electrical bill.

Easy To Install

Finally, most solar power fans are easy to install. Typically the solar power fan is self-contained and requires no assembly and of course no electric wiring to a power source is needed.

Simply cut a 12 inch diameter hole in to the roof sheathing and place the enclosed flashing over the one foot hole. The sheathing will prevent leakage during times of rain.

However, it is important to remember that the installation of the solar power fan requires full exposure from the Sun's rays. Therefore, placing the fan so that it is facing south is the best direction to receive the full benefits of the Sun's power. In addition it is important that the fan not be placed in the shadows of any tree limbs or other overhanging items that may obscure the Sun's rays.
