Speed through Wordy Documents with Speed Reading Techniques
By Alexandra MacLeod

Reading wordy documents and text heavy articles or reports can be taxing on the eyes and very time consuming. Often there are too many details in the documents we have to read and we end up wasting precious time. The obvious solution would be to speed read, but how exactly does one speed read? Is it just a matter of reading as fast as you can or is there a particular way you should go about it? There are a few simple speed reading techniques that you can adopt when reading to get through a document quickly while still retaining important information.

Reading More, Reading Quickly

When children learn to read they go through a sentence slowly, word by word. As adults we obviously don't need to read each word on it's own when reading. However the number of words that you can read at one go is probably not as efficient as it should be. One of the key speed reading techniques is to increase the amount of words you read. When reading your brain separates the words in a sentence or line of text into groups. This first speed reading technique is to increase the number of words in the groups you create in your mind.

When first practising this speed reading technique it will take some effort. However making a conscious effort to increase the number of words in each grouping will increase your reading speeds enormously. Too often people read an inefficient amount of words, going slowly through details that are often irrelevant. Using this technique will also help in picking out only important details. Your mind will be drawn to the facts and information that is important.

Using A Pointer

Even when reading at normal speeds it is sometimes helpful to run a finger along the lines of word to help you read better; anything that has a lot of unfamiliar terms or is hard to understand for example. Using a pointer such as your finger, a pen, or pencil is also another speed reading technique that is simple and very effective. As mentioned above, simply running a pointer along a line of text will help you to read faster. Doing this will reduce the need for you to go back and reread something. This habit of rereading something adds up and it is amazing how much time you can save.

Another method that is connected to the earlier method of increasing the number of words in a group is to place your finger in the middle of a line of text. By doing this, your eye is drawn to your finger and you will soon be able to read very quickly by continuously moving your finger downwards. These speed reading techniques are very simple and yet will be tremendously useful once you have practised and become comfortable with them.
