Smoking has been noted as being one of the worst habits to affect the physical health of people today. It is a habit that due to its' social acceptance and “cool” image over time, has been one that has been quick to be taken up in society, and one that is hard to get rid of. It is one of the main factors that contribute to the lifestyle diseases commonly affecting the population today such as cancer and stroke. And the worst part is that the suffering and deaths as a result of smoking is needless. However, the good news is that we all have the decision to either stop smoking cigarettes, or to not start the habit in the first place – it just comes down to choice.

Why People Smoke

People smoke for a number of different reasons however most tend to stem from stress, social trends or social acceptance, and lack of education. Some people begin their smoking habit as teenagers during a rebellious stage or to “fit in” with their peers, whereas others may take it up as adults for similar reasons or due to social acceptance and to help deal with stress. Smoking is a well known stress-reliever which is also highly addictive, making it a hard habit to kick. But although difficult, this does not make stopping smoking cigarettes impossible to do - just a little challenging.

Prevention: Better Than Cure

In order to stop smoking cigarettes, one needs to make a firm decision and a game plan of how and why they are going to quit on order to do so successfully. And because quitting can be such a difficult thing to do, prevention of others taking up smoking is often better than cure. Society today has done an excellent job of making people aware of the dangers of smoking, which has not necessarily been the case in past years.

Today, television ads, magazines and cigarette packets now come branded with graphic pictures of the result of smoking as well as warnings of what cigarettes contain, and what detrimental effect these substances may have on the body. These look to be working, with statistics indicating that less and less people, particularly of the younger generations, are taking up the habit. However in order for this to continue, people need to be constantly reminded of the effects of smoking, which will in encourage those who do light up to stop smoking cigarettes once and for all.

For those who are looking to quit, they need to remember that the most difficult part is starting. Io order for people to stop smoking cigarettes, they need to be aware of the difficulties that they are going to face so that they can prepare themselves for these times. To get through this, there are a number of products and services on the market to help reduce the cravings and enable people to stay-smoke free, however before these can come into play; people need to make the choice to quit themselves. Things like nicotine patches, gum, pills and help-lines are there for support, and to support only. These things may help you to stop smoking cigarettes, but inevitably, it will come down to what you want to do.
