By Elizabeth Penning
As stress has reached near epidemic proportions in the country's population many who have traditionally relied on prescription medicine are now searching for healthier and less addictive resources. There are many beneficial herbs for stress relief that have been used for hundreds of years. Stress is a natural process of our daily lives but for many the constant overload of input becomes detrimental.
Chronic stress can cause many physiological and mental symptoms that can lead to health and behavioral problems. It has even been shown that babies can feel stress even in the womb if the mother is under a lot of stress. There are many natural herbs for stress relief that can supplement our diets and put us on the road to good health.
Types of Herbs
Chamomile has long been used as a sleep aid. It is a great herb for stress relief as well. This plant can be made into teas that are soothing to the nervous system. It will allow for a good nights rest and has the benefits of calming the stomach as well.
Lavender has been used in teas for relaxation for centuries. Its luxurious smell has given it the boon of being a unique herb for stress relief. Scented, sachets, oils and potions used around the bed or placed on the linen allow for a soothing relaxing sleep. Many people use it in soaps, perfumes, and room sprays as it lulls the senses into a soft state of relaxation. Lavender is a good herb for stress relief because it works internally to relax you and externally to sooth you with its fragrance.
Kava Kava comes from the root of a plant from the South Pacific. It was used in ceremonies and caused a reaction similar to alcohol. Kava Kava is beneficial as an herb for stress relief because it helps with anxiety as well as allows muscle and tension relaxation that leads to better sleep.
St. John's Wort is also another herb for stress relief having being used extensively in Europe for treatment of anxiety and depression. There studies have been done to show its benefits are comparable in treatment to some of the prescription medicines. They do not advise its use for severe conditions and it is recommended to see a doctor before self medicating.
These herbs for stress relief have had success in reducing the physiological and psychological effects of our over loaded systems. It is shown that a good balanced diet, exercise and meditation also are beneficial to our lives. With stress a lifestyle change and evaluation is also important.
