A Considerable Option: Plastic Surgery for Stretch Marks
By M. A. Fulmar

Plastic surgery in today's times is almost as common as a facial, or pedicure. If you are a new mother, or have gained excessive weight over the years, chances are you have also gained a few stretch marks on your body. Plastic surgery for stretch marks is possible, but it is best to first decide if it is in fact right for you.

First, here is some background on what stretch marks are, and how plastic surgery can help.

Stretch Marks

When you gain weight, your skin will stretch out to support the amount of weight that has been put on. Sometimes, if an extensive amount of weight was gained due to pregnancy or other reasons, the collagen and elastin that supports the skin is torn, thus creating stretch marks. These marks on the skin can appear light pink or white, and are usually not deep indents in the skin. About 90 per cent of pregnant women get stretch marks, and the severity depends upon how elastic their skin is, and how much weight was gained.

Most doctors advise women to keep their weight gain during pregnancy between 25-35 pounds, as this will help prevent serious stretch marks. After pregnancy, or after weight has been lost, stretch marks will usually fade within a year.

Plastic Surgery Options

Plastic surgery for stretch marks is a limited option for those who are trying to reduce or almost eliminate the appearance of stretch marks. While some believe that Lasik surgery is a good type of plastic surgery for stretch marks, most doctors would say otherwise. Lasik surgery actually breaks down tissue, instead of repairing it, so it would not work very well for the broken collagen that causes stretch marks.

Another type of plastic surgery for stretch marks that may actually have results is a tummy tuck. If the stretch marks appear below the abdomen, then a tummy tuck, which removes the extra fat and skin tissue in that area, will also remove the stretch marks.

Lastly, microdermabrasion is a choice for reduction in stretch marks. This kind of plastic surgery for stretch marks "sands" the skin, thus removing dead collagen and allowing for new skin tissue to be formed.

Whether you want to completely get rid of stretch marks, or at least reduce the sight of them, it is best to consult with your physician first regarding any kind of surgery.
