Danger Lurks At Public Swimming Pool
By Linda Rogers

Most communities that maintain a public swimming pool plan extensively for the safety of the public who uses the facilities. However, despite the best planning there will always be unexpected circumstances that could jeopardize the swimmers in the public swimming pool.

Trained lifeguards are typically on duty and their certifications are available for viewing, but their experience level may be in question. No one will ever doubt their knowledge or ability to help in stopping a potential drowning but their ability to deal with a range of public swimming pool emergencies may be in question.

Other swimmers at a public swimming pool also offer danger whether through carelessness or failing to pay attention to others around them. Horseplay by a few can place several swimmers in jeopardy by jumping into the water and onto other people without looking or realizing what they are doing. They may also introduce foreign objects into the water that can cause harm to others in the public swimming pool.

Despite the best efforts by the community operating the public swimming pool, diseases can still be freely transmitted from one to another through the water and there have been isolated outbreaks of serious illnesses known to have been spread by persons using a public swimming pool.

Pool Is Good Gathering Place For Friends

Despite the opportunity for danger at a public swimming pool, they are still a great place for friends who do not have their own swimming pool to meet during the hot summer months to gather and enjoy the relaxation of water sports.

Keeping in mind the safety of your group as well as the safety of other around you can enhance the overall all fun experience of everyone using the public swimming pool. Small children especially must be watched and guarded closely by their adult supervisors to ensure their safety as well as to make sure they do not interfere with the plans of others using the public swimming pool.

When swimming with friends and strangers it requires a great deal of common sense and common courtesy to insure everyone can have an enjoyable time in the water without fear or being injured, or fear of injuring someone else. While the overall responsibility for the safety of the swimmers falls to the operators of a public swimming pool, personal safety needs to be the responsibility of everyone at the pool.
