Who Needs A Swimming Pool Enclosure?
By Linda Rogers

Check With Your Local Municipality
Most municipalities require homeowners who have an outside swimming pool on their property to erect a swimming pool enclosure. A swimming pool enclosure can be a fence, a wall, or a building with a door.

Be sure to check with your local municipality to see if you need to get a permit before you build a swimming pool enclosure. Your local municipal office will also be able to advise you if there are specific requirements for how a minimum height for your swimming pool enclosure.

A homeowner who goes ahead and builds a swimming pool enclosure without first obtaining the proper permit can be fined. If you are having a contractor build the enclosure for you, the contractor may be able to to look after getting the permit on your behalf.

Types Of Swimming Pool Enclosures

Some locations also specify that the swimming pool enclosure must be constructed of specific materials. For example, you may be permitted to use a chain-link fence as a swimming pool enclosure, provided it is tall enough.

A homeowner would almost certainly be able to construct a wooden fence around the pool area. A self-closing gate should be part of the plan for an appropriate swimming pool enclosure.

Safety Issues

In children under the age of five, drowning is a leading cause of death. It only makes sense to put up a fence around a swimming pool to keep children, either your own or the ones in your neighborhood, from entering the pool area.

No one, no matter how careful, can keep an eye on their swimming pool 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In order to be properly insured, a homeowner is obligated to have a fence or enclosure surrounding the swimming pool.

In the situation where you have a fence erected on three sides and your home is the fourth side of the enclosure, be sure that the door or doors leading out to the pool are locked at all times.

Pool alarms are available to warn of someone entering the pool or pool area without your knowledge or consent. Check with your local pool supply store to find out what types are available.

As a pool owner, it's a good idea to take a CPR course so you are prepared in the event of an emergency. Keep a cordless phone by the pool in case you need to call for help. And do keep children in sight at all times when they are enjoying the water.

Who needs a swimming pool enclosure? You do.
