A Guide To Swimming Pool Tiles
By Linda Rogers

Swimming pool tiles are made from glazed porcelain. They are manufactured in such a way as to be waterproof, as well as frost proof. Durable enough to be used in any climate, swimming pool tiles are available in a wide variety of colors.

To make installation easier, the individual swimming pool tiles can be purchased mounted on a piece of mesh. Trim pieces, such as borders, can also be bought in this same fashion.

Sizes Of Swimming Pool Tiles

Swimming pool tiles are available in several sizes. The 6” x 6” size is generally used for raised walls. If you are looking for tiles for a curved pool, the 3” x 3” size would be a good choice. For step markers or to make a decorative border, choose a 2” x 2” tile.

The smallest swimming pool tile available measures 1” x 1”. This size can be used for step markers as well. Some people choose to use these very small tiles for the entire interior of the pool.

Patterns Of Swimming Pool Tiles

Consumers can choose from a wide variety of swimming pool tiles. Would you like to install a tile border with a floral theme? Do fish or dolphin patterns appeal to you? Perhaps a rope pattern or something more abstract will give you the decorating look you desire.

When considering swimming pool tiles, don't forget about the pool deck area. Some consumers like the look of a textured tile with the look of natural stone. Whether you choose a sandy, desert tile for the deck area or something more colorful, the look of a peaceful oasis can certainly be achieved in a pool or spa area.

In fact, the decking tile chosen can be installed in the patio area of the home as well. The space will then seem to flow together, as opposed to being chopped up. When purchasing swimming pool tiles to be used on the pool deck, be sure to ask whether the tiles are slip-resistant.

New Finishes

A relatively new product on the market provides the look of a pebble-bottomed stream to a swimming pool. This option is lightly textured, but easy on the hands and feet. A variety of hues are available, and the pool owner can choose the size of pebbles desired.

New pools have a pebble finish applied during the installation process. This detailing can be added to existing pools as well. In the case of a plaster pool that has become cracked, the pebble finish will repair the problem and give an updated look, as well!
