Should You Use A Toddler Backpack?
By Mary Simmons
You child has reached a point in development when they've begun asking to bring items of their choosing along to stores, family visits, and more. You've run out of room in your purse, and trying to juggle multiple items and hang on to your child is nearly impossible. Is it time to start using a toddler backpack?
Toddler Backpack Styles
If you've seen a character in a book, film, or television show, chances are there's a toddler backpack with their image emblazoned upon it. Toddler backpack construction is similar to adult backpacks, with a main carrying area and smaller zippered pockets. They generally include two over the shoulder straps which are often padded for comfort, and a carrying handle on the top of the main compartment.
Some are lined and designed to keep items cool, but most have a plastic coating on the inside so they're easy to wipe out. Goodness knows a toddler backpack can get very messy in a hurry - think tuna sandwich and Oreos mashed together in between papers. Lots have handy features such as magnetic closures or easy tabbed zippers for little hands, and recently packs in the form of a stuffed animal with straps have become quite popular.
How to Decide If a Toddler Backpack is Right for You
In order to use a backpack safely, your child needs to be steady on his feet and well balanced. For children in daycare or preschool, a toddler backpack is a must. It will allow for the easy transport of a change of clothing, special foods, toys, and paperwork going back and forth each day. It will also help your little one feel a connection with home as well as a sense of personal responsibility. Taking special items to family gatherings will give children the feeling that they're contributing as well, and packing up loot and carrying it in their own case is a good feeling for any child!
If you have any concerns about the risk of back injury to a toddler wearing a toddler backpack, ask your pediatrician for advice and guidance on the subject. There is a basic formula that uses a child's weight to determine how much they should be carrying, but it's best to err on the side of caution and keep your child's backpack as light as possible. Never allow your child to wear his toddler backpack for more than an hour at a time. Backpacks can be functional and fun, and there is a design out there for just about anyone!
