Toddler Pool Safety
By Mary Simmons
Most toddlers love swimming…toddler pool time can be one of the best and memorable summertime activities (or year round for those fortunate enough to live in such climes) that your child will never forget. Sadly, with the onset of each swimming season we hear tragic stories of toddler pool injuries or death. Everyone wants their children to be safe, so if you have a pool there are certain precautions you can take to make sure your family avoids such a horrible occurrence. If you have a pool but don't have children, you also bear a responsibility to ensure that your pool area is safe and secure as well. Toddler pool safety is simple and often inexpensive, so no excuses!
Why Pools Are Dangerous For Toddlers
Young children don't comprehend the concept that water can be dangerous and deadly, period. If you swim regularly and conduct toddler pool activities with your child, they will be even more attracted to the water. A toddler will not hesitate to walk right off the grass or walkway and think they can walk in the water as well. Think your child is 'well behaved' and would never disobey you? Think again. Toddler pool drownings have happened to many a child whose parents thought that exact same way and took no precautions for safeguarding the pool area. It isn't a matter of behavior…and it's your duty as a parent or pool owner to make unauthorized access as near impossible as you can.
Tips For Maintaining Toddler Pool Safety
First, always make sure your children are supervised. Many toddler pool deaths occur when a child is outside alone. Always know where your children are, and keep them in your line of sight. If you need to go indoors to use the bathroom or answer the phone, bring the children with you. Never leave a child unattended near a pool! Second, place barriers between your home and the pool. Lock all doors to the outside when you're inside, and install a self locking fence that's nearly solid all around (or at least with openings no one can fit through). Keep anything that could be used to climb on and hop the fence locked away too. Locking pool covers are also a great way to prevent toddler pool injuries and deaths.
What To Do In An Emergency
If your child falls into the pool while you're watching, dive in and get them out as quickly as you can. This may seem to be simple common sense, but many a parent panics and freezes in this situation. In the instance that you happen upon your child, or someone else's child, in your pool…remove them immediately, yell for help or dial 911 and begin CPR. Always keep a phone close to the pool area in case of emergency…it can save a life!
