Toddler Shoes for Comfort, Protection and Fashion
By Mary Simmons
Toddler shoes come in a wide variety of shapes, styles and colors. There are few parents who can resist purchasing at least one or two pairs of these cute fashion finishers for their little ones. When it comes to the shoes that a toddler will use for walking however, how do you know when it is time to transition your tot to regular shoe wear? And which shoes are best for beginning walkers? The answers to these questions will offer some basic guidelines on purchasing and using toddler shoes wisely.
The Comfort Factor
The most comfortable and healthiest way for a child to learn to walk is on his bare feet, many orthopedists and pediatricians will agree. A barefoot child will get a better feel for the way in which the foot is supposed to move with each step. This process of learning a heel-to-toe motion is generally not completed until about the age of eighteen months, so keep your child's toddler shoes in the closet as much as possible until that time. If you live in a colder climate, you can put socks on your child's feet to keep them warm. Look for socks that have a rubber tread on the bottom, to protect your little one from slips and falls.
Protecting Little Piggies
Another factor to consider in shopping for toddler shoes is protection for the foot in various situations. If your child will be walking outside, a toddler shoe with a heavy sole will offer protection from the natural elements that can cause injury. The shoes will also keep your child's feet dry and warm while playing outdoors. If you feel that your child needs additional protection indoors as well, there are soft-soled shoes available that will offer more protection than a sock, but still allow your child to feel the proper motions of his feet while taking steps. These soft-soled toddler shoes are primarily designed for indoor use, and can be found in a variety of colors and styles to coordinate with your tot's clothing.
Making a Fashion Statement
Dress-up days are occasions that require shoes in almost every circumstance. Whether it is a pair of black patent-leather Mary Janes for the best-dressed girl on your list or a miniature pair of top-siders for your favorite little Joe Prep, you will want to have a pair of special toddler shoes on hand for special celebrations. Once your toddler has been walking independently for at least two months, most experts will agree that increased shoe wear will not hinder the development of your child.
