The Invention of the Toddler Table
By Mary Simmons
The old adage, “Necessity is the mother of invention” is a perfect fit to explain the creation of toddler tables. The idea of designing special tables for toddlers was originally sparked in the mind of former church minister Glenn Holland. He noticed that many of his parishioners with children in tow missed parts of his sermons because the parents had difficulty keeping their children still and occupied in the church pews. To improve his church services and provide for the needs of his flock, Glenn Holland founded “Toddler Tables”, a manufacturer of specialty children's furniture.
Toddler Tables Design
To convey his messages to his listening parents more effectively, Glenn Holland began creating special tables just for kids in the mid 1980's. The design of this table was unique in that it carried seats built into the table top. This feature allowed several kids to sit with safety and comfort, playing and interacting together while their parents sat and listened to the church service. The benefits of these special little tables were apparent right away, and the demand for toddler tables increased as organizations, daycare centers, and households all caught on to the value and practicality of Holland's tables for kids. This demand would eventually lead to the establishment of the Toddler Tables Company that is based today in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Models
There is a variety of choices in tables for toddlers that include four or more seats. The most popular height for the table is 27 inches. A 14-inches height is also available for parents who like to sit on the floor with the kids for playtime. Tables with four seats, called junior tables, are the most popular among consumers because they offer larger seats, although these tables are still best suited for toddlers younger than two and weighing a maximum of 30 pounds. Tables with one to three seats are also available. The popularity of these varieties can be attributed to qualities like compactness, versatility, and adjustability of legs. All the toddler tables are available in a variety of colors and beautiful designs to match individual taste.
Pricing
The price of these toddler tables varies according to the model, size, and the location that you are ordering from. Toddler tables with one to two seats carry an average price of under $200. A three-seat table may cost around $350 while the four-seat models will run a little bit higher. The largest table includes eight seats, and can be purchased for around $400.
