Choosing between Types of Travel Insurance
By Andy Anderson

Many people are wise enough to take the time to plan their trips well before leaving. Often taking great care to cover all aspects of the trip right down to the smallest of details. Before booking they will make careful research into their various travel options and all other details ensuring that they adhere to their carefully scheduled itinerary making sure that nothing is missed.

Sadly it is often such finely detailed plans that become pointless due to "unforeseen events". This is because there are many unexpected events that can happen to anybody at any time.

Obviously there are some terrible things that can happen that we all dread such as natural disasters. I am sure that you will have seen on TV a person describing a terrible event such as an earthquake who is obviously a tourist visiting the area. We feel sorry for the person and their possible losses but we also imagine that this would "never happen to me". Your vacation can be ruined by any one of a number of reasons including illness and accidents, robbery or assault, or some of the many other horrific things that we have all heard of.

I am sure that most readers will know of travel insurance and how it can help reduce the impact of such events. However many fail to investigate which type of policy is most suitable for them. Some even find themselves without cover for their personal situation because they had not taken out the correct policy. Take a look at the descriptions below to gain a basic understanding of the different types of travel insurance available.

Single Trip

The single trip type of travel insurance is ideal for those who travel less frequently as it provides coverage for only one specific trip. However, there are a great many other policies available for those people who do not fit into this category. If you don't need this type of coverage then your decision on travel insurance coverage can be more difficult.

Annual

The most cost effective option, suitable for those people who take more than just one trip each year is the type called annual or multi-trip travel insurance. You should always read the policy carefully before purchasing this type of travel insurance because some policies may contain limitations on the trip length (some even exclude trips of over thirty days). There are also policies that may exclude holiday travel. As in any form of contract you should always read the fine print before purchasing any insurance policy, the importance of this can not be overstated.

Family

Family travel insurance is the best policy type for those who are traveling with their children or parents. The main benefit of this policy is that you don't have the need to buy separate travel insurance policies for each member of the family as everyone is covered as a whole. There are various premiums whose cost depends on the family travel insurance policy you are choosing. Some companies base their premiums on the number of children covered by the policy, while other companies charge flat rates.

Business Traveler

Another type of travel insurance policy that makes the assumption that you will travel several times a year is the business travel insurance policy. This policy is squarely aimed at the needs of a typical business traveler but non-business travelers may consider this policy option. One feature, that is unique to this type of policy, is the fact that if you find yourself in a situation (more often an emergency) which prevents you from being able to take the trip; the insurance company will allow you to transfer the ticket to another employee in your company, this is known as colleague replacement coverage.
