Celebrating Valentine's Day As A Family
By Sally Brompton

Celebrating Valentine's Day can provide an opportunity for you to express your undying love to not only your sweetie, but your children, parents and loved ones as well. Don't be cheap, share the love! Get your whole family involved in the Valentine's Day celebration.

Ideas For Kids

Kids are great at making unique Valentines. Give them some construction paper, glitter, markers, candy and cookie cutters and they'll go wild making Valentines for everyone on their list.

Let children help with baking some decorating sweet treats for your Valentine's Day celebration. Cookies, brownies, cakes and cupcakes are easy to whip up. For those of you more adventurous, visit a candy supply store and make your own chocolate confections to give as gifts to friends and loved ones.

Getting Your Spouse Involved

Finding ways to involve your spouse in your Valentine's Day celebration may take some thought. If you cannot came up with any appropriate activities for your spouse, you can always ask them to gather supplies from the store, tack up banners or taste your latest sugary confection.

Don't Forget The Grandparents

When planning your Valentine's Day celebration, remember to include your parents, grandparents or Godparents. People who no longer have children living in their home usually delight in messy coloring pages, crafts dripping with too much glue and brownies with bites missing. Take the opportunity to share the sunshine your children exude with your loved ones.

Involve Your Neighborhood

Consider going public with your Valentine's Day celebration. Valentine's Day can be celebrated in a fairly informal, relaxed atmosphere. You don't need cloth napkins, ice sculptures or a suit and tie to throw a Valentine's bash. Just put up a few streamers, make the invitations and keep the sugary sweets flowing freely.

Invite the whole neighborhood if your house can hold them. Just have fun. For a twist, you can go with a theme party, like The Sea of Love, or Valentine's Day in Tahiti. You can even dress up if the mood strikes you, remember the goal of your celebration is to express your love and have fun!

However large you make your Valentine's Day celebration, keep the essence of the holiday at the center of your preparations. If it becomes a chore or is stressful, abandon your plans for a quiet, intimate family dinner by candlelight. Show yourself some love this Valentine's Day and don't overdo it, just have fun!
