Other people send cards on this special day just to express their affection for people without the rings, flowers and chocolates.

Valentines Started with St. Valentine

St. Valentine's life is a legend that people have read about for hundreds of years. This man was a priest who lived hundreds of years ago, but his message of love for other people lives long after his demise. This priest thought that some of the rules of the government at the time were not fair because these kept some men from getting married. He married people in secret. When the ruler found out about his actions, St. Valentine was arrested for his disobedience to the laws. Eventually the ruler, Claudius, visited St. Valentine and tried to get him to give up his religion.

When St. Valentine refused the plea of the ruler, Claudius ordered the death penalty for St. Valentine. St. Valentine supposedly left a note for the daughter of one of his jailors before he was executed. This was the start of the special day for St. Valentine because he was put to death on February the 14th, which is now known and celebrated as St. Valentine's Day. There are other versions of the legend of St. Valentine, but the important thing is that he was known to encourage those in love. This day is still remembered as a day for expressing love long after this important man died.
