Functional Features of VoIP Phone Systems
By Tony Cunningham
Analog phones may be used with VoIP service using specialized routing equipment; this type of equipment is known as an analog telephone adapter, these adapters usually can convert two standard phone lines into a VoIP phone system. Many VoIP providers give them to customers free as long as the service is active, and not all companies will allow customers to use their own adapters with the company's service. There are entire VoIP phone systems which utilize cordless phone technology; these systems have a single base unit in which all the handsets may be placed for charging, each hand set has a long battery life, up to 120 hours in stand by mode and 10 hours talking, which allows them to be placed around a home for convenience.
The docking station in which the handsets charge receive a signal from a USB device plugged directly into the computer; for this reason some VoIP phone systems do not require any software or any of the computers resources, they can simply access the internet via a broadband internet connection wirelessly using a built in Ethernet card.
Using VoIP Phones
These special VoIP phone systems have neat features like address books which can hold up to 120 contacts, color navigation screens, walkie/talkie between handsets, and the freedom of movement expected from a cordless analog phone. They also feature mute buttons, a choice of ring tone, and a light and easy to use design. The VoIP phone system can make the transition from analog phone service to VoIP easier, as it utilizes many familiar features, the phones docking station has a paging feature, ringer on/off, and has a jack to connect a head set. There is often very little set up involved; the VoIP phone systems can utilize a plug and play technology.
This VoIP phone system technology is easy to use and cost efficient; the service usually comes standard with features that analog telephone companies call premium features. These features include voice mail, call waiting, three-way-calling, caller ID, calling block features, 411 directory assistance calls, and last dialed redial.
Many of the services are much lower priced than traditional analog services, an average of $25 a month for unlimited calls nationwide, and some services include the entire North American continent or more to their unlimited plan. There is concern with 911 access and these types of VoIP phone systems because they don't necessarily have to have a static location; but many companies offer lithium batteries and require users to register their addresses with local authorities to expedite any required emergency services.
