VoIP system: Changing the Way People Talk

For the uninitiated, VoIP systems allow the user to change the way that he or she thinks about making long-distance phone calls. VoIP makes use of analog audio signals which are similar to those one hears when talking on the phone and, converting them into digital data that is further transmitted over the Internet. The main advantage of the VoIP system is that it allows the Internet connection to place free phone calls by bypassing the local phone company and transmitting the data over the Internet. VoIP is revolutionary technology that will someday completely change the face of voice communication and Voip providers such as Vonage are leading the way. While traditional phone systems made use of reliable though inefficient connection of calls using circuit switching and, even though modern phone companies do use digitization of voices, data networks simply use the Internet to send and receive packets of data, as and when needed.

The data packets flow through complicated networks consisting of thousands of paths and this is known as packet switching. The difference between circuit switching and packet switching is that the former requires constant connection while the latter only needs a brief connection that is just long enough to send a small data packet.

Taking Technology to a Whole New Level

VoIP systems do not have to rely solely on Internet connections and are also able to use regular telephone lines as well as business-grade connections such as T1 for voice service. However, some VoIP systems may not be able to allow for making emergency calls through routers to a call centers and, it is unable to provide information that is helpful in locating the caller.

There are possibilities for a VoIP system to interface with the usual PSTN and also mobile phones by taking the help of technologies that merge internet technologies with mobile systems and, also making use of a pure VoIP infrastructure. Very often, businesses make the decision to switch to VoIP when they need a new phone system. This would involve buying components that will make the VoIP system functional and, include phones (obviously) and a service company that will make the complete system work as well as connects the phones to the worldwide telephone network and, finally, the connection itself.

The connection may be a few pieces of wire or a rack of servers and switches as well as gateways and routers, all running at top speed and, be connected to both the Internet as well as PSTN. There is however a great deal of complexity and for this a good deal of time and money needs to be invested in understanding as well maintaining the VoIP system. All this of course, requires that the investment to go in for a VoIP system should be made after considerable forethought and, it should also be economically viable.
