What Do You Know About VoIP Technology?
By Tony Cunningham
Voice over Internet Protocol, or also known as VoIP, IP Telephony, Internet telephony, Broadband telephony, Broadband Phone and Voice over Broadband, is becoming very famous these days, especially where there is broadband internet coverage around the whole world. Unlike conventional phone systems, this VoIP technology works differently where it routes the conversations over the internet or through other IP based network. Unlike conventional phone systems also, this VoIP telephony service allows you more of mobility and functionality. On mobility wise, for example, users of Instant Messenger based VoIP services can also travel anywhere in the world and make and receive phone calls. On functionality wise, for example, incoming phone calls can be automatically routed to your VoIP phone, regardless of your location anywhere in the country.
How This VoIP technology Works?
This VoIP technology works in a very simple way. To make it easier, it works the same way as to how your computer is connected to another computer through internet during a chat session through AIM, MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, GoogleTalk and so on. To make it technical, your VoIP phone is connected to a computer network. And this network is connected to a VoIP gateway, which eventually connects the whole network to the internet.
The gateway, which is part of this VoIP technology will take the voice that comes in and convert it from analog signals to digital signals. Then, itcbreaks down the digital format into smaller units known as data packets and they are transported through the internet. The data packets will reach the other gateway nearest to your destination, and there the digital signals will be translate back into an analog format. And finally, you will be connected to the number you called.
The Hardware Involved
This VoIP technology may sound very complicated to those who are not familiar with the system and the working of the system itself. Actually there is not much things concerned on your part, as your service provider will take care of everything. You do not even have to go the internet service provider and apply for an ADSL or DSL line, simply because the telephony service comes with. This VoIP technology is not demanding at all. All you need typically would be your computer which is able to support such calls, modem, sound card, phone set, VoIP router, analog telephone adapter if you are using PSTN phone, PC handsets, and also PC headsets.
