When to Use an Arsenic Water Filter
By Tony Cunningham
Concerns about the purity of drinking water have been around since humans began drinking water. Hippocrates, the ancient Greek father of modern medicine invented a water filter to remove impurities from water. As science has developed ways to identify chemicals and discovered which ones are harmful and in what concentration, water filters have been made to remove specific types of chemicals.
One of the chemicals that everyone wants to keep out of water coming into the home environment is arsenic. Anyone can obtain a reliable arsenic water filter these days. The question is knowing when one is needed.
What's in the Water?
Arsenic is a naturally-occurring element. In certain areas, ground water contains some concentration of arsenic naturally. Water that comes from a city system is filtered and tested. The question for those who get their water from the city is whether or not harmful chemicals can their way into the water after it leaves the city facility.
Usually, only chemicals found in the pipe system are a danger. They include rust, lead and chlorine. An old system of pipes, however, may have leaking joins or other ways for chemicals in the ground to leach into the water. Older home pipes can also contribute some harmful additives.
The real danger with arsenic is in water from wells. Harmful elements found in ground water can get into well water. Where arsenic is a natural part of the ground water, where it may have been part of mining runoff, or where air pollution may contain arsenic from factories, well water should be tested for any harmful ingredients.
The good news is that almost any harmful chemicals including arsenic can be filtered out. Just about any type of filter that can be purchased for home use is an effective arsenic water filter. If testing shows that your water contains harmful elements, you can install an arsenic water filter that will help purify water as it comes into the home.
This will help to limit the amount of arsenic, chlorine, lead and other problems in all of the water used for bathing, dish washing, clothes washing and cooking. An additional arsenic water filter can be added to the kitchen sink to ensure that drinking and cooking water is extra clean. The first step to cleaner water is to find out what needs to be cleaned out of it. Once that's done, confer with the experts to install the best arsenic water filter for your needs.
