Water Filter: An Modern Essential

Water filters or water purifiers are now considered by many to be an essential piece of kitchen equipment.

[Water filters are devices which remove impurities from water via the use of filters. Filters are available for filtering water suitable for various uses and the designs of the water filter vary considerably. Uses vary from the industrial water filter used to cleans water for use in foodstuffs, equipment cooling, farming etc. to consumer uses such as for home aquariums, showers and for drinking water. For the sake of this article we will be concentrating on water filters for the home].

Kitchen Water Filters

In the modern household it is not uncommon to find some kind of water purification system. Many homes now opt for a whole house approach while others opt for simple cartridge based jug water filters.

I had never considered using a filter until the day our water supply was "upgraded" to meet EEC regulations for drinking water. Boy did it stink! Only a few moments after the turn of the tap (faucet) the kitchen smelled very strongly of chlorine. Prior to the upgrade we had lovely soft drinking water which came from a nearby loch (lake). At times it appeared a little brown, especially following a storm, but is was very pleasant to drink. Following the upgrade our water still came from the same source but it was filtered and treated at a new water treatment plant first. Unfortunately our water contained very large amounts of organic matter and there was a requirement that this had to be reduced dramatically. The only way this could be done was by the addition of aluminum and chlorine to kill any bacteria.

Obviously I was horrified with the results so I investigated the purchase of a water filter. I managed to pick up a Brita water filter very reasonably and the replacement cartridges could also be obtained easily and, more importantly, relatively cheaply. They were so cheap that I actually bought two. After only the first use I realised that the decision to buy teo rather than just one had been a wise one because the whole family were amazed at the difference it made.

Health benefits were obvious, the smell of chlorine had been removed 100% and we knew that other, invisible, pollutants had also been removed but the taste is hard to describe. Previously the water tasted of chemicals, yes really strongly, now it had little taste but it was highly refreshing. I noticed a massive difference to both the flavour and appearance of hot drinks. Previously my cup of tea had appeared dark and rather lifeless but now it was a lovely golden tan colour that sparkled, and the taste, well it was far more refreshing and I noticed delicate flavours that had simply not been there before! The same could be said for coffee but it was in tea that the greatest difference occurred.

The introduction of a water filter to the kitchen has made such a difference that we can no longer imagine our kitchen without one, it really is essential. I decided to make a comparison so made one drink with filtered water and another with water straight from the tap (faucet). Two seconds later the drink from the tap was down the drain!

Other Considerations

After only a few days of our water supply changing we all started to suffer from various skin complaints. It was obviously more than a coincidence so we visited our family doctor who advised taking showers instead of bathing. There was an immediate, but sadly not complete, improvement in our skin so it is showers from now on.

This got me thinking about whole house water filters. I was aware that you can get special shower water filters but it seems to me that it was simply make more sense to ensure that all of the water used in the home is filtered before use. A simple benefit would be that I would only need to replace one filter at a time.
