Do You Need to Invest in a Water Purifier?
By Tony Cunningham
The easiest way to answer this question is to test your water to see just how clean it really is. Since water test systems can vary greatly in price based on what exactly they test for, it is not a bad idea to educate yourself about the types of substances you should look for prior to conducting any tests.
You can obtain a copy of the Consumer Confidence Report from your local utility that will give you a list of the substances that your water has already been checked for. From that information, you can determine if you want to do further testing for lead, pesticides or chlorine, to name a few of the potential hazards that you can find in your drinking water.
Once you have sufficiently tested your water and you know what substances you still need to filter out of your system, you can move on to the selection of the proper water purifier for your home. There are many types of water purifiers on the market and each one will vary considerably in cost and number and types of substances that are filtered.
Types of Water Purifiers
The least expensive water purifier that you can buy is one that uses a carbon filter. Look for a solid block charcoal filter rather than one that uses carbon granules, since the solid block filters are usually more effective. These types of water purifiers are generally found in the pitchers that include filtration systems or on those that attach directly to your faucet or to the pipes underneath.
For a water purifier that will filter even more substances out of your drinking water, you can look for a reverse osmosis system. These purifiers use a membrane to filter substances out of your water. The unclean water that contains the sediment is diverted away from your faucet as waste. These systems are extremely effective at filtering a large amount of contaminants out of your water; but they also tend to be much more expensive. If you find that you need a filter that will rid your water of numerous substances, the reverse osmosis water purifier may be a good choice for you.
The Effectiveness of your Water Purifier
To assist you in shopping for the best water purifier for your money, the National Sanitation Foundation as developed a system for certifying water filters. A water purifier with a NSF Standard 42 rating will filter out most substances that will affect the taste, color and odor of your water. On the other hand, a rating of NSF Standard 53 means that the water purifier will remove even more of the contaminants, including pesticides, fluoride and most heavy metals.
