What You Need to Know to Choose a Water Purifier Filter
By Tony Cunningham
Water purifiers have become big business over the years, and the increase in demand has also created an increase in selection. While this is helpful to many homeowners who are shopping for a water purifier filter, it can also be confusing if you are not sure what to look for. The solution is to do a bit of homework prior to your shopping trip to make your purchase for your water treatment system.
Step One: Test the Water
Before you can know what type of water purifier filter is best for your home, you need to know what contaminants are in your water supply. Your public utility that supplies your water is required to disclose the tests done on the water supply, and the impurities that have already been filtered out. You can get a copy of this test to find out what substances you still need to rid your water of. You can also perform your own test on your water at home, or hire a professional to come in and conduct a test for you.
Step Two: Identify the Contaminants
Once you are armed with the results of your water testing, you can begin the process of choosing the appropriate water purifier filter. If you discover that your drinking water is harboring bacteria, you will want to look for a UV filter that will work directly on bacteria contaminants. Chemicals and sediments on the other hand, require a carbon filter or a reverse osmosis filter.
Carbon filters tend to be the least expensive and the easiest to install. These work most effectively on chemicals that primarily affect the taste, odor and color of your water. Reverse osmosis filters actually take out even more contaminants and impurities than the carbon filters. These tend to be a bit pricier, but can be worth the additional peace of mind that they offer.
Step Three: Consider Placement of your Water Purifier Filter
If you decide to go with a carbon filter, you will have options for where to place your system as well. These come in various forms, from the pitcher, to the countertop model, and even a system that attaches to the plumbing underneath your sink. Whatever type of water purifier filter you choose, you will need to determine where your system will be located and whether you will need professional installation. It is also important to maintain your system regularly to ensure that it continues to function most effectively.
