The "Wedding March" and Other Ceremony Music

"Wedding March" is a song by Mendelssohn for "A Midsummer Night’s Dream." Traditionally, this song is used as the recessional of a wedding ceremony, while the bride, groom, and wedding party exit. The "Wedding March" has long been used since it is tradition, however many brides and grooms are choosing to forego tradition and choose ceremony music that reflects their personal style and music tastes.

The "Wedding March" Versus Non-traditional Options

The bride and groom often choose a special theme for their wedding ceremony and reception. This theme is enhanced by the wedding music they choose to incorporate into their special day. The bride and groom should consider this theme as they make all of the major wedding planning decisions.

The "Wedding March" is an obvious choice for a bride and groom who are planning a very traditional, classic wedding. This is also a great choice for a wedding ceremony that is occurring in a church, since this is also traditional in nature. In order to keep with tradition, it is a good idea to choose processional music that is also traditional in nature. In this case, all of the ceremony music should be complementary to "Wedding March."

Rock or Techno

When the bride and groom choose to express their own style within the ceremony music, "Wedding March" is likely not going to be on the list. The wedding music should reflect the overall theme of the wedding. If the bride and groom choose, they can enter and exit the ceremony to rock music or techno music. The sky is the limit when it comes to personalizing ceremony music that best showcases the personalities of the bride and groom.

Sometimes, the people who plan a non-traditional wedding will choose to use "Wedding March" simply because it is beautiful. There is no rule saying what music a bride and groom must choose to incorporate into their ceremony. The wedding is all about the love and commitment of the bride and groom and so the music should be personal as well.

Music is such an important aspect of every wedding, that the bride and groom should consider their options carefully. There are many wedding web sites dedicated solely to wedding music choices. Regardless of which music the bride and groom eventually choose for their wedding ceremony, chances are that "Wedding March" was on the list at some point.
