Many carer's would hope that after all the strenuous and dangerous tugging and pulling up a set of concrete stairs had been accomplished that, at the top, there would be a door sufficiently wide enough for the wheelchair to pass through. Following many years work by public access advocates that has now all been changed by new laws and the increased public awareness has helped greatly in the overall attitude of people.

When you see a wheel chair lift being used at a public building think about it for a moment and consider how difficult it would be for that person to get there without it. Then take another look at the people who complain bitterly at the cost of adapting old public buildings to allow access by everyone. I am sure that you would agree that the need for such changes goes far beyond that which can be measured in terms of cash cost. Yes the biggest thing that needed to be changed was the public attitude. In the past architects planned buildings which reflected the grandness of municipal pride, however, it has since become the accepted mind-set to plan all buildings with the needs of users as the most important aspect of design. This means that signs should now be easy to follow and be clearly informative. Those cuts in the curb that allow safer street crossing for those in a wheelchair also makes the stroller bound or shopping cart bound equally safe. Doorways to rest rooms are now made wide enough to allow a wheel chair and this has made life far easier for those who need to use a walker or crutches ( and also larger people who need a little extra width). In designing buildings to accommodate the wheel chair lift and other measures to increase disabled access architects have, maybe unwittingly, increased accessibility for a large, but silent, sector of society - the elderly. Most elderly people have problems with their mobility but few complain. After a hard day a flight of steep and never ending stairs can be terrifying. However, the sight of a wheelchair lift not only helps them in tackling the stairway it gives them the opportunity for a well earned rest.

Yes the attitudes of all of us are changing fast and to the benefit of so many minorities that they end up benefitting the majority. People who suffer from allergies or breathing difficulties are finding great relief as smoking is no longer allowed in many public areas. Those people with guide animals are no longer excluded from certain areas and they no longer need to explain. When you see one of those buses that appear to "kneel" for passengers to enter easily think how nice it is for yourself to have the reassurance that, if something terrible happened to you that meant you would need to use a wheelchair that you would no longer have to face the struggles of the past.

People in wheelchairs no longer spend their lives at home the improvements mentioned above, together with improvements to the chairs themselves mean that a life outside is now, not only possible, but thoroughly enjoyable.

That wheel chair lift at the front of a municipal building stands there as a monument to independence for the people, yes, all of us.
