Manual Wheel Chairs: Sometimes The Old Way Is Still The Best Way
By A. M. Kelly
Why Choose A Manual Wheel Chair?
Some wheel chair bound people may be older people or people who could be described as a “traditionalist.” Certain people are just opposed to the over-use of technology. Though they may even acknowledge the usefulness of motorized and electric powered wheel chairs, they just don't see the need for them for themselves. These people do just as well using a traditional manual wheel chair. They would not want to become overly reliant on technological advances like automatic wheel chairs and would prefer to rely on a wheel chair powered manually by their own hands or those of a caregiver.
Times When Manual Wheel Chairs May Be A Necessity
Oftentimes, people who need a wheel chair aren't going to need it forever. Not everyone in a wheelchair is paralyzed for life. Sometimes an injury such as a sprained ankle or broken leg can put a person in a wheel chair for a short period of time while their body heals. In these situations, an expensive powered wheel chair is not really necessary. A traditional manual wheel chair will do just fine.
Sometimes a wheel chair is needed for a brief period of time during an emergency. For example, a woman going into labor will often be given a wheel chair at the hospital in order to be taken to her room. In this case also there is no need for an electric or motorized wheel chair. Since the period of use is so short, it is just as practical to use a manual wheel chair.
Some people can not afford a motorized wheel chair and thus are forced to use a manual wheel chair. Even though automatic wheel chairs are becoming more affordable and insurance and Medicare can sometimes cover the costs, a person in a dire financial situation must turn to the cheapest alternative. Manual wheel chairs can often be obtained for free from various charitable organizations that provide wheel chairs to those who need them.
Manual Wheel Chairs Work Just As Well
Don't be fooled into thinking that every wheel chair bound person must have a state of the art automatic wheel chair. While this technology is amazing and does allow for increased mobility, any wheel chair is still an excellent device for helping those who need them. Any chair with wheels is better than nothing at all when it comes to paralysis.
